Tayside Police launch fresh push to find John McMurchie’s killer

Detectives investigating the murder of a 50-year-old father of five today returned to the scene for a “high-profile” operation in a renewed bid for information to catch his killer.

John McMurchie, from Errol, died from his injuries after being found in Fintry Terrace in Dundee at around 4am on August 12 last year.

Officers will set up a mobile incident caravan in the Whitfield area today, as well as speaking to residents and handing out fliers.

Earlier this week, the man leading the investigation, Detective Inspector Bobby Dow, said that a forensic search of a house in Murrayfield Gardens, where Mr McMurchie was known to have been socialising prior to his death, had revealed that the 50-year-old was involved in a “significant physical altercation” within the property shortly before he was found in the street.

DI Dow said: “We know that there was an altercation in the house in Murrayfield Gardens and we know John was injured in that altercation.

“Someone knows who is responsible for John’s death and what went on in that house. They need to do the right thing and come forward and tell us.

“For the sake of John’s family, his wife, his children, his grandchildren, I would urge anyone in the community who has heard any information, no matter how insignificant they think it might be, to get in touch with us.

“Let us decide how important the information you have is.

“We will have a high-profile presence in Whitfield today, knocking on doors and handing out fliers in a bid to jog memories. The mobile incident caravan will also be situated in the community, so that residents can stop by and talk to us.”

The house in Murrayfield Gardens was returned to its occupier James Falconer on Monday following a five-month forensic examination.

Mr Falconer was released without charge after being questioned by police in the wake of Mr McMurchie’s death.

The charity Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to £5,000 to anyone providing information anonymously on 0800 555 111 that leads to the arrest and conviction of any person in connection with Mr McMurchie’s murder.

Anyone who has any information which would be of assistance to officers investigating Mr McMurchie’s death should contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222, or speak to any police officer.
