EUROPEAN CUP hero John McGovern returned to his home town of Montrose yesterday for a book signing.
The man who lifted the famous trophy as captain of the great Nottingham Forest team two years in succession 1979 and 1980 was back in his Angus birthplace to promote his autobiography, From Bo’ness to the Bernabeu: My Story.
It charts McGovern’s path from humble beginnings all the way to the home of Real Madrid, where Brian Clough’s side defeated German club Hamburg to collect their second European Cup.
The aforementioned Clough is understandably prominent in the book, having taken the midfielder with him from Hartlepool United to Derby County, then on to Leeds United and finally Forest.
As well as the European Cups, McGovern won the English Championship with both Forest and Derby.
He said: “I may have moved from Montrose when I was a young lad but I still have family here and it remains a special place for me.
“To be back to sign the book is a real thrill and I am loving chatting to people.”
