The chairman of a renowned jam and preserves manufacturer has been named Angus Ambassador of the Year.

Paul Grant, chairman of Mackays Ltd in Arbroath, was recognised by the judges for his entrepreneurial spirit, outstanding promotion of Angus around the world, his support of the local economy and people, and his strong sense of corporate responsibility.

He believes in supporting his local community and was the first corporate sponsor of the new Angus Centre for Enterprise, as well as helping the long-term unemployed back into work.

He also insists that Mackays use locally-produced ingredients wherever possible.

Alan Mitchell, chief executive of Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, said: ”It was a very difficult decision to pick a winner in each category, as all the finalists deserve recognition for all the good work they do.”

Mr Grant received the award from sponsors Piperdam Golf and Leisure Resort, at the awards ceremony at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel.

The awards, presented by Angus Ahead and sponsored by local companies, were hosted by Andrea Brymer, of STV’s North Tonight.

Other winners included Intervention Rentals Ltd, in the business and international categories. The community award went to Norrie Stein of the CAFE Project in Arbroath.

Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre won the cultural award, while Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club was the winner in the tourism category.

The youth award went to Ailsa Russell of Carnoustie, a student at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. A tenor horn player, she has played individually and with a band at international level.
