The Knights of the Round Table are assembling in Angus next month for a slap-up performance.
Arbroath Musical Society has captured the rights to put on Broadway smash-hit production Spamalot at the town’s Webster Theatre.
And the cast have ended up with more than just a hectic production schedule on their plate, as a local business chipped in towards a supply of fresh fish for the musical’s opening scene.
Monty Python member Eric Idle wrote the hit musical based on the long-running comedy and its film spin-offs, such as 1975’s Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
One of the most celebrated scenes in the show is the “fish-slapping” scene and Arbroath show organisers could not believe their luck when M&M Smith offered them £300 which should more than cover the price of fish.
Tracy Gibson, speaking for the society, said the cast will put on an all-singing, all-dancing, all-slapping version of the stage musical, with all the humour of Monty Python.
She said: “We have been very lucky to attain the rights to produce such a fantastic West End musical and we hope the public will come along and join us for what is going to be a rare treat of fun, hilarity and Monty Python nonsense.
“M&M Smith have offered to sponsor the fish-slapping scene, which is the first scene in the show and in typical quirky Monty Python style, it is centred around fish, acted out by Finnish citizens slapping one another with fresh-caught fish, while singing and dancing to a very catchy tune.”
Spamalot tells the tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and features witches, cows, killer rabbits and comically adversarial French soldiers.
The production runs from February 11 to 14 and tickets are still available by calling the theatre on 01241 435800, emailing info@webstertheatre.co.uk, or visiting the box office.
