Slow decline of Strathmartine Hospital ‘not good enough’

Angus Council is considering plans to redevelop Starthmartine Hospital.
The former Strathmartine Hospital’s slow decline is “not good enough” according to members of the public.
Angus Council is considering plans for the site’s redevelopment, but vandalism is rife and large sections of roofing have caved in.
Property consulting firm Muir Smith and Evans, representative of the site’s owner, said there is only so much it can do to protect the property.
The company has submitted a planning application for 26 flats in the listed section of the hospital and 198 homes elsewhere.
Campaigner Karen McAulay, who has been trying to keep the site preserved for nearly a decade, said the situation is now critical.
She said: “If the front part of the main building collapses, that will put at risk the B-listing category of the building, because that is the most historically significant part of it.
“If that falls down, we’re in big trouble. Right now, the front door is open, the back door is wide open in fact all the emergency exits are wide open too it’s not good enough.”
Strathmartine Hospital was opened as the Baldovan Institution in 1852 and closed in 2003 following staged decommission by the NHS in the 1980s.
