A community campaign to reduce the speed limit through an Angus village has made a breakthrough.

A petition, signed by every household in Craigton of Monikie asking for a section of the B961 to be reduced from 60mph to 30mph, is now being considered by Angus road chiefs with a view to it being brought to committee.

The petition sparked a meeting between the police, the council’s senior traffic engineer, Craig Hudson, teachers from Monikie Primary and the school’s parent-teacher partnership and Councillor Bill Bowles.

A commitment was made by Mr Hudson to consider bringing a report to the council’s communities committee, examining reducing the limit.

Fiona Gray, who started the campaign after concern for children crossing the road, said she was pleased the 220-name petition had made an impact.

In the past Angus Council has stated the road does not meet the criteria to be reduced to 30mph due to the number of homes facing the road but discretionary powers could be used.

Councillor Bill Bowles said: “The senior traffic engineer is of the opinion that it can be taken to committee with the recommendation for a reduction in speed.”
