A lorry driver who caused an accident when his vehicle’s rear wheels swung into the opposite lane and hit a car was sentenced at Forfar Sheriff Court.
Shaun Coull, 31, had previously admitted driving without due care and attention during the incident which took place on September 22 last year on the B9133 Forfar to Montrose road at Fledmyre Quarry.
Coull, of North Street, Montrose, braked sharply, causing his wheels to lock and the rear of his lorry to swing into the opposing carriageway.
A car travelling in the other lane on the B road collided with the lorry, overturned and came to rest on the driver’s side, leaving the driver trapped and injured.
Coull’s defence agent told the court: “He is employed by a haulage company and had been tipping a load at a quarry on the outskirts of Forfar.
“There were temporary traffic lights on the road and when he came round a corner he saw that other vehicles had stopped in front of him.
“The lorry tanker moved into the opposite carriageway and a car coming in the opposite direction was struck.
“Coull got out of the lorry and assisted the other gentlemen and contacted the emergency services.
“It appears that he was fairly unlucky on the date in question.
“He wasn’t in a rush. It’s a road he knows well.
“He would apologise to the court and the other driver who was involved.”
Sheriff Gregor Murray fined Coull £300 and imposed four penalty points on his licence.
The sheriff added that had it not been for Coull’s early plea then the penalty would have been a £450 fine and six points on his licence.
