Courier minibus competition: Giveaway gives Angus trust a new goal

The trusts Links Park Soccer Saturday scheme would be one beneficiary if it won the minibus.
The trusts Links Park Soccer Saturday scheme would be one beneficiary if it won the minibus.

Members of an Angus community club have spoken of their desire to win The Courier’s minibus competition.

Links Park Community Trust is based at the Montrose Football Club stadium and works across three strands: sport, education and health. It uses football to inspire change across those three areas and believes a new bus would give its scheme fresh legs.

Peter Davidson said the trust is now running a dementia-based reminiscence project called Football Memories, a Walk and Talk social engagement programme, and Walking Football games for men and women.

He added: “We try and make our programmes as affordable and accessible as possible. We see hundreds of children and there is no set fee we work on a donation model. But there are a lot of people who would like to use our facilities but can’t get here; for example, older people who would like to engage in our health programmes.

“It’s coming across, through partners, that there are a lot of adults who can’t come or are reliant on carers to transport them to Links Park. Our plan for a new minibus would be to engage with these older adults and transport them to and from our programmes.”

The trust has won an Angus Council partnership excellence award for working with schools. Mr Davidson said a new bus would make the trust’s facilities more appealing to schools, adding: “A bus can be used to cut costs for schools to come to us, as we can go and get them.”

The trust recently completed the “signing” of Scottish international footballer Abbi Grant, who hails from Montrose, as an ambassador.
