A 30-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman in Arbroath on Tuesday.
He is due to appear at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Thursday.
Residents of Culloden Road woke to intense police activity after the woman, later named as Joanne Rennie (35), died in suspicious circumstances at her home.
Officers were called to the flat at about 1.45am following reports of a disturbance. They found the woman with serious injuries, and although ambulance staff worked on her, she died in the house.
Several neighbours said the first they knew of the tragedy was when they woke on Tuesday morning and saw the area flooded with police.
Crime scene officers carried out meticulous examinations in the flat and rear garden, while plain clothes detectives and uniformed officers made door-to-door inquiries.
A mobile command unit was parked at the side of the property and uniformed officers stood guard at the street-level rear entrance and at the upper level access to the flat.
A shocked Debbie Smith, who lives in nearby Sidney Street, said: ”I can’t believe what’s happened. I didn’t know (her) to have a proper conversation with, but if I passedvon the street we would speak.”
Linda Brennan (52), who lives next door, said: “She was a brilliant neighbour. She was a very friendly and happy girl and would come to see me if she needed anything.
“Otherwise, she kept to herself. ‘Shocked’ isn’t the word. I’m in bits.”
Another Culloden Road neighbour, who asked not to be identified, described the dead woman as ”a lovely wee lassie, very effervescent.”
Police have appealed to anyone who was in the area at or before the time of the incident, who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, to contact them on 0300 111 2222, or speak to any officer.
