A guard house and underground bunker with more than 10,000 sq ft of underground accommodation has been put on the market in Angus.

The Guard House at Bervie Brow in Inverbervie was constructed in the 1950s by the British military before being acquired by the US navy in the late 1960s, when it was run in conjunction with the major monitoring station at RAF Edzell.

The site lay unused throughout the 1970s and 80s until it was designated reserve headquarters for group headquarters and sector control at Craigiebarns Dundee.

Situated in 2.68 acres of grassland, the station closed 20 years ago and has been intermittently used for residential purposes.

The house itself contains a lounge, dining room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom with access by spiral staircase to the upper floor with a second bedroom occupying almost the entire upper floor.

Access to the underground is adjacent to the lodge with a narrow sloping corridor leading 18 metres underground leading to a labyrinth of rooms.

Last year American company Terra Vivos looked at buying the bunker as part of its network of underground shelters ahead of the end of the Mayan calendar but determined that it did not offer enough protection from a nuclear blast.

Mark McQueen, an associate at Shepherd Chartered Surveyors, who are now marketing the property, said it could be used for a variety of purposes.

“The substantial underground bunker has a corridor with 10ft thick walls and metal sliding doors offering an unusual level of security.

“The unique nature of this property makes it suitable for a variety of uses, subject to obtaining the necessary consents.

“It might be used for a data centre, a residential development or even a wine storage facility.

“It’s a unique property which is already receiving a lot of interest.”

The main floor of the underground structure comprises of a plant room, kitchen and toilets and 12 other rooms of various dimensions.

On the other floor there is a safe room and more accommodation, toilet and a kitchen. There is not an asking price for the property, with offers invited.

Anyone interested in viewing it is asked to contact the selling agent on 01224 202800.
