Police arrested a man for driving without a licence after he shifted a van to help a shopper get a trolley.
Mark Wade (42), of Ganners Walk, Leeds, appeared from custody at Arbroath Sheriff Court yesterday following the offence on September 26.
He previously admitted driving a vehicle while disqualified at the Westway Retail Park in Arbroath.
The court heard that an off-duty police officer spotted Wade in Asda supermarket.
Depute fiscal Arlene Shaw said: “He became concerned with the accused’s behaviour. He then observed him entering the vehicle and driving round the car park.”
Officers went to the car park and ran Wade’s name through a database check, revealing he did not have a licence.
Defence agent Nick Whelan said Wade had been part of a work team using the van and decided to move it when he saw a member of the public struggling to access a trolley.
He added: “He didn’t make any attempt to run away when the police arrived.”
Sheriff Peter Paterson ordered that Wade, who intends to reapply for his licence, get six penalty points on passing his test.
