The Arbroath smokie is being sent off to hungry homes across the UK as part of a charity drive.
The delicacy will be vacuum packed and will land on doorsteps anywhere in the UK for £11 a pair just 48 hours after being smoked.
The Fellowship Smokies line was launched this week by Arbroath Rotary Club in conjunction with Stuart and Audrey Scott of local fish merchants Stuart’s Fresh Fish.
The smokies will keep for two weeks in the fridge or for up to six months in the freezer.
Rotarian Stuart (43) has been making smokies for 27 years following in the footsteps of his mother using traditional methods.
It’s hoped the Fellowship Smokies will prove as popular as the Fellowship Malt which proved a huge success for Elgin Rotary which teamed up with Gordon & MacPhail.
Stuart said: ”The idea came from a Rotarian two or three years ago but they couldn’t find a fish merchant to do it.
”At that time they didn’t have a fish merchant in the Rotary Club so the idea was brought up again six months ago when I joined.
”I’m delighted to be able to supply my smokies and donate the profits of this new line to the Rotary Foundation.
”I’ve worked it out and roughly 20% of my profits will be going directly to charity and that’s 100% of the profit made by the Rotary Club. That amount is then matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation so it’s win, win, win and we are chuffed to bits.”
Stuart is expecting the Fellowship Smokies will be a big hit with online sales already proving popular for his business.
He said: ”I invented the website three years ago and that now accounts for 10% of all products. I don’t see any reason why charitable people can’t double that because it’s such a worthwhile cause.
”People who order will get them very quickly for example smokies smoked on a Monday will be cooled overnight, vacuum packed on the Tuesday and on their doorstep on the Wednesday.
”That is why they are called Arbroath Smokies Direct they will retain all the flavour and keep for two weeks or six months in a good freezer.”
He believes the freshness of smokies will be attractive to people the length and breadth of the UK.
The Fellowship Smokies have already received a glowing endorsement from award-winning cook and food writer Lady Claire Macdonald, who said the ”flavour experienced from these smokies was just sensational”.
Arbroath Rotary Club president Mike Sowden said: ”We’re hoping this is going to be a great success and bring a lot of attention to Arbroath.
”We are very pleased that Stuart who is one of our newest members has got involved and we hope the Fellowship Smokies will be just as big as the Fellowship Malt, Fellowship Fudge and Fellowship Marmalade.
”It’s a reputable product at a good price and we’ve received endorsement from Lady Claire Macdonald and we’re also trying to get Nick Nairn interested. This will be another great advert for the town which is continuing to move forward.”
