‘It is just laziness’ call for action against Angus fly-tippers

An Angus farm manager claims fly-tippers are ”ruining the countryside”.

Windyhills Farm outside Arbroath has been targeted by dumpers, who stop in a small layby off the Auchmithie road to throw unwanted goods and garden waste out of their cars.

The problem has escalated in recent weeks and over the last few days the spot has seen fridges, freezers, TV sets, tyres, boxes and general rubbish left at the roadside.

Gary Bruce, who runs the farm on behalf of owners P&J Stirling, said he will be contacting Angus Council in a bid to get some assistance or warning signs put up.

”It is happening more and more often,” he said. ”Fly-tipping has always been an issue but it seems to be getting much more regular.

”A least once a month there is stuff dumped there. One of the problems is that there is a layby off the road where they can park, so it makes it easy for them to come at night and get rid of it.”

The road runs from Seaton Den past Seaton Cliffs, a spot previously described as the ”jewel in the crown” of Angus tourism.

Mr Bruce said it is time for the landowner and the local authority to work together to come up with a solution.

”I would like the council to do something but it would need to be discussed first. We are having to go out and tidy it up every time it happens and it is just becoming an eyesore. It is on our side of the land amongst the trees, but you can still see it from the road.

”I can’t get over why they just can’t take their rubbish down to Cairnie Yard which is just a couple of miles down the road it is just laziness.”

Arbroath councillor David Fairweather said he had seen a sofa dumped at the roadside in the town last week.

He said: ”Anyone who witnesses somebody fly-tipping anywhere in Angus should contact the council or the police immediately. These people can face a substantial fine and all they are doing is creating an eyesore in our towns and in our beautiful countryside.”

A council spokeswoman said: ”Fly-tipping can be dangerous and harm the environment, and can prove costly to clear currently Scottish local authorities spend in excess of £2.5 million each year clearing up illegally dumped waste.

”Fly-tipping should be reported to Angus Council ACCESSLine on 08452 777 778 or the Scottish Environment Protection Agency on 01241 874370.

”The council can issue fixed penalty notices of £50 for fly-tipping and courts can impose a penalty of up to £40,000.”
