Skilful skateboarders are set to show off their skills as part of a dream to build a £130,000 skatepark in Arbroath.
Various fundraising events have taken place already this year to raise the cash for the park, with a fun day now set to be held on Saturday July 28 at West Links.
Two years ago the plans were put forward by local teenagers who, fed up with being moved on from their informal biking, skating and boarding spots, decided to act.
The fun day at West Links will take place from noon to 5pm and will feature demonstrations, stalls and local skateboarders showing off their skills.
Jillian Low of Arbroath Skatepark Project said: ”This promises to be a fantastic fun day for all the family. The skateboarders will be strutting their skills on the half pipe which has been domated for free by the council.
”Although there are costs for hiring equipment, it is hoped donations will boost the skatepark fund.”
The event will feature Limelight Company Musical Productions, Mark Davies from Best Defence (martial arts), a zumba class, Arbroath Gymnastics Club, Showcase the Street and a boot camp.
There will be a toddlers’ corner, wet sponge throw, giant inflatables, dog agility demonstrations, a mobile kids’ playground and catering.
Arbroath councillor David Fairweather is a long-time supporter of the bid for a skatepark in the town.
He praised the efforts of everyone involved in the fundraising drive so far and said next week’s event should prove extremely popular.
”I would commend everyone who is involved in the fundraising campaign and hope the public come out and support the fun day. There will be something for everyone and hopefully, the weather will be kind and it will be a fantastic success.”
The proposed skatepark will be situated in Arbroath at the West Links. Similar park projects have gone ahead in Forfar and Montrose.
Skaters in Carnoustie are also attempting to raise money for its own skatepark and both projects have been promised cash from the council.
The £30,000 to each cause was set aside by Councillor Mark Salmond, the previous convener of corporate services, in February’s council budget.
The authority’s decision to grant the groups the money is provisional and will only be given if the groups raise a further £100,000.
Stalls for the event next week are still available and anyone who wants to get involved should contact Jillian in 07791 169 313.
