Dundee City Council is supporting Fife Council as it fights to keep RAF Leuchars open.
The base is under threat as part of the strategic defence review, and a strong local campaign is being mounted to ensure it is retained.
Part of that responsibility will fall to Dundee councillors next week when they are asked to support efforts by Fife Council, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government to keep Leuchars flying.
Councillors on the city development committee are being asked to agree their support for the facility and ask administration leader Ken Guild to write to the defence secretary to put those concerns forward.
It is feared the removal of more than 1600 personnel from the base would hit Dundee’s economy hard.
A note to go before the committee on Monday states, “There has been recent speculation that, following the strategic defence review, the RAF base at Leuchars may be vulnerable to closure.
“Work is under way by Fife Council to work with the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise to make the case for the retention of the Leuchars base.”
It adds, “RAF Leuchars employs 1340 military personnel and 270 MoD civilian staff and is located within the Dundee travel-to-work area.
“It is therefore a major employer and a major driver of the local economy through expenditure of many of the personnel living within the council area.
“It is recommended that the committee agrees to support efforts by Fife Council, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government to retain the Leuchars base, and that the leader of the administration write to Dr Liam Fox, secretary of state for defence, expressing the council’s concern at the prospect of the closure of RAF Leuchars.”
Labour communities spokesman Councillor Richard McCready welcomed the move calling on Dundee to show support for RAF Leuchars.
He said, “I am worried about Dundee jobs.
“I am also concerned that rumours that Leuchars could be turned into a commercial airport would have a detrimental impact on Dundee Airport.”
