A Dundee Labour candidate faces being sidelined by her party ahead of next year’s general election.
It is understood Labour’s primary focus will be on ensuring Jim McGovern is re-elected in Dundee West rather than trying to get Lesley Brennan to Westminster, despite Dundee East being unveiled as a “target seat” last January.
Labour insisted there would be no review of the list, but the feeling within the party is it is more likely the SNP’s Stewart Hosie will increase his 1,821 majority rather than see it overturned.
At number 34 on the list drawn up by Tom Watson, the seat appeared to be Labour’s number one Scottish target.
Looked at from a national perspective, it would suggest recent survey results are causing Labour to concentrate more on protecting seats rather than pushing to make gains.
East End councillor Ms Brennan has launched an individual fundraising night, which sources say has been snubbed by local trade union leaders.
It is understood a number of officials view the event as a desperate bid to finance her own campaign.
Unions are said to be outraged money from the “Dundee Trade Union and Labour Movement” event is being funnelled into her election bid.
Ms Brennan slammed talk that her bid to claim a seat in the House of Commons had been stalled by the party as “mischief making”.
She added: “I have a full-time campaign organiser, who is not going anywhere, apart from on holiday next week.
“Dundee East is a key seat and the team and I are working hard every day to win the seat back for Labour and it’s looking promising.”
