A group of travellers squatting in a Dundee industrial estate claim they chose the site in protest at being evicted from an official council site at Balmuir Woods.

The ad hoc campsite was set up around a roundabout to the north of Claverhouse Industrial Estate by the A90 Forfar Road.

Although the roundabout is in a cul de sac, large vehicles often use if for turning. However, this has now been made difficult because of the number of caravans around the circle.

One occupant of the camp – who refused to give his name – said he and his group had chosen the site in protest at being moved on from Dundee’s official site for travellers at Balurmuir Wood by Tealing.

He said: “They (Dundee City Council) actually evicted us off the site at Balmuir Wood about two or three weeks ago – apparently it was anti-social behaviour.

“It must be costing them more to keep getting court orders to move us.”

The travellers had previously set up camp in Whitfield but left that site earlier this week, leaving two caravans behind.

They claimed they had been forced from Whitfield because they youths in the area had pelted them with stones and threatened to torch their homes.

Now, the traveller claims they are staying in Dundee because of their treatment at the hands of the city council.

When asked about the perils of living on a roundabout, he said: “Obviously, it’s a problem but there wasn’t a problem when we were on the site.

“To be honest, we are only doing this because they put us off that site.”

Dundee City Council has said the group – which includes around seven caravans – had been evicted from the Balmuir Wood site over rent arrears.

A spokeswoman said: “The council took legal action against travellers who were staying at Balmuir Wood for non-fulfilment of tenancy conditions.

“We are aware of the current situation and we are taking all appropriate and relevant action.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland is working closely with the local authority on this matter and will provide support and assistance as required.”

The Balmuir Wood site was built specifically for travellers and has 20 individual pitches.
