A travel writer who neglected to include any attractions in Dundee in his guide to places to visit in Scotland said he has “always enjoyed” visiting the city.
Pete Irvine, who worked on Dundee’s failed bid to become UK City of Culture, refused to name any of the city’s sites in his latest edition of Scotland: the Best 100 Places.
The decision was questioned by city council leader Ken Guild, who said that Dundee had many interesting places to visit and would have even more in the future.
Mr Guild said: “There are many superb places in Dundee that are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
“These include the McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery and Museum, Dundee Rep Theatre, Dundee Contemporary Arts, Olympia swimming centre, Discovery Point and Verdant Works.
“Dundee is also home to some stunning open spaces like Camperdown Country Park and Broughty Ferry beach.”
Dundee was joined by Aberdeen in having no attractions listed in the new edition of the book.
However, in a statement, Mr Irvine said: “The title of the book does point to the fact that this is a very condensed and photographic version of the usual Scotland: the Best guidebook, which has over 2,000 entries, many of which are around Aberdeen and Dundee.
“Scotland: the Best 100 Places may not feature places in the city centres of Aberdeen or Dundee but there are many in their immediate vicinity.
“I have visited and worked in both Aberdeen and Dundee many times and have always enjoyed discovering and rediscovering them and bringing their great restaurants, hotels, bars, parks and visitor attractions to wider attention.
“I take this very seriously and will continue to do so. I am currently working on the latest Scotland: the Best book (where) both cities will be extensively recommended.”
