Increase in overdose admissions to Ninewells Hospital

Drug overdoses are leading to an increasing number of hospital admissions in Dundee.

New figures have shown that 76 people were admitted to Ninewells Hospital after overdosing last year a 65% increase on 2013-14, when there were 46 incidents.

By comparison, 52 people were admitted to hospital in Aberdeen for the same reason.

Although the number of admissions in Edinburgh (106) and Glasgow (176) are higher, the figures suggest that, based on population, people are twice as likely to end up in hospital in Dundee as a result of an overdose.

The number for Dundee could, however, be skewed as Ninewells also accepts admissions from people living in the wider health board area.

Dr Drew Walker, NHS Tayside director for public health, said: “Clearly any drug use carries a degree of risk and it’s crucial to ensure that individuals are aware of the risks involved.

“Drugs sold illegally may not contain what the seller says and they are likely to contain a mixture of substances, both active and inactive.

“This can also lead to increased risk of an overdose and other side effects.”

Austin Smith, who is policy and practice officer at the Scottish Drugs Forum, said the rise was “concerning”. He said increasing use of psychoactive drugs whose contents are often unknown could be one reason for the increase.
