Research staff at Dundee University believe they have made significant steps towards understanding what causes Parkinson’s disease.
It’s hoped that the findings will give experts further insight into the possible causes of the disease, and allow further steps to be made towards treating the illness more effectively.
Dr Helen Walden, heading up the research, explained: “Parkin is a protein which exists in what we call an auto-inhibited state
“What we have done is work out how Parkin is kept switched off, and how it is switched on.
“This is important because it reveals the mechanics behind a process that goes wrong in so many cases of Parkinson’s disease.”
The results of the research have been published in The EMBO Journal.
