A Dundee soldier has described the “absolutely shocking” scene as he rushed to help the victims of a horrific fatal road crash.
Royal Scots Dragoon Guard Ross Heenan, from Menzieshill, and two colleagues were first on the scene at the two-vehicle head-on collision in Dorset on Sunday.
An 86-year-old woman died in the incident at Hethfelton Hollow and three others were seriously injured.
Ross, 22, who is based at nearby Bovington Camp, told the Bournemouth Echo: “We came around the corner and the crash had just happened.
“We jumped out straight away and helped them.
“We just made sure they were all conscious and reassured them and tried to tell them it was going to be okay and an ambulance was on the its way and wouldn’t be long.
“I can’t describe how harrowing it was, it was really bad. I am first-aid trained to deal with casualties because of my role in the army but it was still absolutely shocking.”
Police said the elderly victim was the passenger in a Ford Fiesta being driven by a 60-year-old Australian man.
The vehicle was involved in a collision with a Hyundai i30 driven by a 36-year-old man.
Fire crews had to cut both drivers from the wreckage and they suffered serious injuries. Four ambulances and air ambulances from Dorset, and Somerset and Devon also attended the scene.
A 51-year-old man, the Fiesta’s rear-seat passenger, sustained “very serious” injuries and was airlifted to hospital. His condition remains life-threatening.
