Model boat club’s regatta sunk once again by weeds in Dundee pond

An event for model boat fans in Dundee has been sunk by weeds.

It is the third time that Dundee Model Boat Club has scrapped its annual regatta because of the problem.

The club has used Swannie Ponds in Stobsmuir as its venue for the June gathering since 1885.

The last two years, however, have seen the popular event cancelled due to the amount of pond weed growing in the water.

Despite Dundee City Council’s attempts to clear it, the regatta has now been axed for a third year in a row.

Forbes Milne, president of the club, said: “We have dealt with weeds in the pond before it’s nothing new.

“But the weeds keep coming back and this year the amount of weeds is worse than ever.

“The council really went above and beyond last year to clear the weeds by draining the pond, scraping up the weeds and pumping fresh water back into the pond.

“But the weeds have come back and, for some reason, it is even worse.

“I think it’s due to the warm winters we have been having, so the weeds aren’t completely killed off by cold temperatures.

“Our regatta will be cancelled for the third year on the trot, which is really disappointing for the club and its 60 members.”

Last week, the council started to drain the south pond to deal with the weed problem.

Alan Maich, the chairman of Friends of Swannie Ponds, said different measures had been discussed to resolve the build-up of algae and weeds in both the north and south ponds.

He said: “The weeds and algae in the pond have been an issue for a few years now.

“The council opted for weed killer to try to get rid of the weeds, so we’ll have to wait and see if it will be effective. If not, we’ll have to try new ways to deal with it.”

Craig Melville, environment convener for the city council, said: “There has been an issue with weeds in the ponds and the council, along with members of the community, are looking for a long-term solution.”
