Call for talks to resolve Dundee community garden stand-off
ByThe Courier Reporter
A councillor has called for talks to resolve a stand-off over a community garden.
The disused council-owned site off Liff Road has been built up with planters and a roundhouse, but the volunteers behind the work have been threatened with eviction.
Environment convener Craig Melville said: “Council officers have visited the site and there appears to be a number of concerns about safety and the fact it is council land as well.
“These community garden initiatives are something we would like to promote, but it has to be done in the correct manner, liaising with the council and making sure it is done legally.
“The relevant groups need to come together and talk things through and that should have been done prior to all this work. Personally I would not like to see the area demolished or bulldozed, but they need to properly engage the council.”
Nearly 1,500 people have signed a petition backing the community garden.
