A wall of lighted candles representing Dundonians’ Christmas wishes is being created to brighten up this year’s festivities.

A rack is being created to hold hundreds of fragile lights to coincide with the start of the Dundee Christmas Festival on Friday.

People can light candles to add to the giant display in Shore Terrace from 6pm to 9pm as part of the celebrations.

A spokeswoman for organisers One City Many Discoveries said: “Last year we had jam jars in the city square filled with light as an image and a lot of people wanted to know what we were doing and if they could light a candle.

“People seemed to really like the idea of making a wish at this time of year and so we started wondering how we could make that happen.”

The Dundee Rep production team have been helping create an eight-foot-high “bookshelf-like” structure to house the tea lights in jars.

Each will have a message attached.

She added: “The more people who come along and light candles the more the wall will go up the way and it should look really pretty from a distance.”

The candle light display has been supported by the Shore, the Rep and Mackays in Arbroath, which has donated the jam jars.

Festive shoppers will be able to enjoy the Christmas market which runs from 11am to 9pm.

The biggest celebration the city has seen in years will include a torchlit parade through the centre at 6.30pm before the Christmas lights are switched on by Santa at 6.45.

The grand finale will be a fireworks display accompanied by a Star Wars soundtrack at 8.35.

Youngsters are encouraged to come in fancy dress.

Free parking will be available after 3pm at Gellatly Street, Olympia and Greenmarket.
