Almost £90,000 of lottery funding is to be used to improve the environment around one of Dundee’s most iconic landmarks.
The investment will be used to improve access to The Law and will be led by the newly formed Dundee Law Heritage Project.
A key part of its work will be bringing pupils and community groups to the extinct volcano to bring its history to life.
Councillor John Alexander visited The Law to mark the project’s launch and stress its ongoing importance to the city.
He said: “The Law is Dundee’s most iconic landmark and an important part of the heritage of our people and city.
“This project not only refurbishes infrastructure but reflects public support for the Take Pride in Your City events that are already helping clean up The Law.
“In addition, I am thrilled that we are getting such significant support for our work from the Heritage Lottery Fund.”
The funding part of an overall £350,000 investment will allow local people to get involved in renewing paths and steps that will make access easier and more enjoyable for anyone who want to explore The Law.
As part of the scheme events, new signs and schools projects will bring it to life for local people, while a new interactive website will engage with audiences from across the world.
And as the project develops, a part time community participation officer will guide schools and groups around the habitats, celebrate the views of the changing city and encourage local people to become involved in practical projects.
There will be opportunities to bust myths and learn about the landmark and people will also be encouraged to share their personal memories, get involved in habitat restoration and carry out research into its history.
The project will explore the creation of the hill, its use as an Iron Age fort and its settlement during Roman times.
It will also look at its heritage, from the war memorial and Second World War pillbox to the hidden railway tunnel driven through its eastern flank.
Those behind the work hope that a “Friends” group will help keep The Law looking good to sustain the project into the future.
Lucy Casot is head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland and said the HLF was pleased to be supporting Dundee City Council as it works to “enable people to enjoy the history on their own doorstep”.
She said: “The Dundee Law Heritage Project is a great scheme that shows clearly how local heritage can be a catalyst for lots of different activities and bring people together behind a common purpose.”
