Dundee’s UK City of Culture 2017 bid has hit the high street to spread the word about the competition.

WeDundee.com, which invites people to share their Dundee secrets and back the bid, has extended its offering to a stall in the Overgate Shopping Centre this week.

The website gathered thousands of responses ahead of Dundee’s bid being submitted last month, and scores of people flocked to the new stall to share their thoughts.

Organiser Karen Lyttle, 24, said: “I think it’s really great having the website, but you only get a certain catchment of people through that.

“Going out on to the street, speaking to people and stopping them gives you a sense of the real Dundee.

“We have 2,260 backing the bid on the website, which is really good, but Dundee has a population of 156,000, so there are a whole lot of other people to reach.”

Duncan of Jordanstone masters student Karen said responses to the bid had been “really positive so far”.

She said: “I hope they feel they can come forward and speak to us and be honest. We have four different question cards.

“We are asking what surprises you about the city, what is the best thing in Dundee, what is culture in Dundee and what people would like in the city.

“We want people to stop by and fill them in and then we’re displaying them so others can see what they’re thinking. So far, a lot of people have said they want a new cinema in the city centre.”

The stall follows a WeDundee poster campaign, featuring a range of Dundee cultural landmarks, which also aims to highlight the bid.

Dundee faces 10 rivals, including Aberdeen and Hull, in the UK City of Culture 2017 competition. A shortlist will be announced at the end of June, with the winner crowned in the autumn.

The WeDundee stall is open from 10am to 4pm until Saturday on the ground floor of the Overgate.
