AN MSP has called for the Scottish Government and the country’s blood transfusion service not to move the stem-cell harvest facility from Ninewells Hospital.
Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, has written to the chief executive of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service and SNP Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Alex Neil, following what she believes is the decision to remove stem-cell harvesting from Dundee.
Stem cells are harvested to help treat bone marrow patients.
She said: “I am deeply concerned at the impact which the removal of the stem-cell harvest facility at Ninewells will have on patients.
“The transfer of such a facility to Aberdeen will mean patients travelling from Perthshire facing an additional 80-mile journey.”
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Government said last night that no decision on the future of the service has been made.
