Family say blind 80-year-old was ‘dumped’ in Fife care home

A Fife family are disgusted by the way NHS Fife “dumped” their confused, blind father from hospital into a care home.

The 80-year-old, who has suffered multiple strokes, was moved out of Queen Margaret Hospital’s ward six and into a home at very short notice and without his family’s permission.

His eldest daughter, who has power of attorney, had originally agreed to a move, but after speaking to her siblings that decision was quickly changed.

The first they heard their wishes had been ignored was when a voicemail was left on his eldest daughter’s mobile phone.

“I cannot believe the way he has been treated,” said his youngest daughter. “He has had five strokes, has been registered blind and is very confused.

“Imagine moving him, aged 80, in that condition without his family around him.

“They just dumped him in the home and left him.”

The incident is the latest in a string of controversies from NHS Fife as it fights its chronic bed-blocking crisis.

Now the distraught family are preparing an official complaint against the “disrespectful” way in which the health board has handled the case.

NHS Fife interim director of acute services Professor Scott McLean said: “We are very concerned to hear this story.”

Mr McLean encouraged the family to contact the patient relations team to discuss their case.
