The plastic surgery services at Ninewells and Stracathro hospitals in Dundee and Angus have received a significant boost in the form of laser equipment from the Disfigurement Guidance Centre charity in Cupar.

The charity donated two lasers to the service, adding to its previous gift of a pulsed dye laser, used mainly for the treatment of vascular birthmarks in children and adults.

The new equipment includes a Q-switched laser used for the treatment of pigment-related conditions of the skin, which will be used in the plastic surgery laser clinic at Ninewells, and a dual-purpose laser which will be used in the operating theatres at Stracathro Hospital.

Consultant plastic surgeon Stuart Waterston said: “We are extremely grateful for this generous donation. This new equipment will greatly increase the capacity of the laser service and also improve access for Angus patients.

“This donation complements the laser equipment already available at Ninewells Hospital and means we can provide a comprehensive service for our patients.

“Many patients living in Fife will also benefit from this donation as my colleague Alastair Lowrie and I run clinics from Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline and Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, with all treatments delivered at either Ninewells or Stracathro.”
