Police investigating a suspicious incident involving a child in Auchtermuchty on Thursday have closed their inquiry after being satisfied that there was an innocent explanation.

Police revealed on Friday that, at around 3.15pm on Thursday, a pupil was spoken to by a man driving a red car outside Auchtermuchty Primary School on the Bondgate.

The child did not reply to the man and went home and reported the matter.

Detective Inspector Nicola Shepherd, who led the enquiry said: “We were keen to trace the man described to ascertain the exact circumstances of the incident.

“I am pleased to confirm that the man in question has been traced and that no crime has taken place.

“I would like to reassure the local community that this was a call with good intent and to thank them for their cooperation and assistance during the investigation.”

The investigation has also shown there was no link to reports of a similar incident earlier that afternoon in Cardenden, and detectives there are still appealing for the driver of that car to come forward.

At around 2.30pm on Thursday in the Cardenden area, a teenage girl was approached by a man, also said to have been in a red car, who engaged her in conversation.

She was not threatened nor was there any physical contact and police said on Friday that the man’s intentions in approaching the girl were unknown.

Police were not linking the incidents.

Detective Inspector Graham Seath said: “We are still keen to speak to the driver of a red car who spoke to a teenage girl in Cardenden on Thursday afternoon, around 2.30pm.

“She was not threatened nor was there any physical contact and the man’s intentions in approaching the girl are unknown at this stage. The driver is described as 40-50 years of age, thin build wearing a dark hat and a long-sleeved top.

“I would appeal to the driver of that car to contact us, or anyone who witnessed the incident, by calling Police Scotland on 101 or providing the information through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
