A five-month-old baby has died in hospital following police attention at a Fife address.
Hayley Davidson was rushed from Buckhaven to Edinburgh with serious injuries after police were informed of concerns for a child on Sunday.
And police confirmed the Levenmouth tot passed away at the Sick Kids hospital on Wednesday afternoon.
Her family released a statement through the force, paying tribute to a “beautiful baby girl”.
They stated: “Hayley is a beautiful baby girl who was loved by everyone who met her and we, as a family, wish to be left alone to grieve at this difficult and trying time.”
Hayley had been under the care of medics since Sunday after local police were called to a property on West High Street, Buckhaven, at around 12.30pm following a report of concern for a child.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “A thorough and rigorous investigation is ongoing as officers progress with inquiries into Hayley’s death.
“A post mortem examination is to be arranged.”
Chief Inspector Adrian Annandale, the Local Commander based at Levenmouth police station, promised a “robust” investigation into the tot’s death.
He said: “This is an extremely tragic and sensitive case and I’d like to reassure Hayley’s family as well as the wider community that we’re conducting a robust investigation and appreciate the assistance provided.”
Police attention focused on two flats in West High Street, which were cordoned off.
Officers were at the scene for a fourth day on Wednesday.
Forensics officers in white suits have been carrying out detailed examinations of the scene since that time.
