The head of Fife’s social work service is to retire.
Chief social work officer and interim director of health and social care Stephen Moore will stand down after 11 years.
Recently he has been at the forefront of major changes to the service, which has had to address a multi-million-pound overspend and concerns over staff morale.
Having taken on the interim post last year, Mr Moore said the time is right to make way for a permanent successor.
“I’m proud to have worked with a caring team who are dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of our children, our elderly and the most vulnerable.
“While my retirement has been planned for some time, I agreed to take on the interim director’s post last year to help prepare Fife for the major reforms ahead and I’ve enjoyed working with a range of colleagues to join up adult health and social care services.
“The time is now right to hand over to a permanent director.”
Having joined Fife Council in 2003, Mr Moore was appointed executive director of social work in 2007.
Previously he had spells at East Renfrewshire Council, Borders Regional Council and Northumberland County Council.
Commending Mr Moore’s work in the region, Fife Council leader David Ross said: “Anyone who has worked with Stephen will vouch for his passion and commitment to the people of Fife and I thank him for it.
“Social work professionals and support teams are unsung heroes in our community.
“Working in difficult and emotional situations they’re easy targets for blame, while their achievements remain private.
“Throughout his career, Stephen has worked tirelessly to make sure no one is left in need and I wish him well in his retirement.”
Mr Moore will leave his post in September and will be replaced by Sandy Riddell.
