A Tullis Russell employee is clinging to life in hospital after a fall on a demolition site at the Markinch paper mill.
The 41-year-old, who was in a critical condition at Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital, was off duty and the company said he was not supposed to be on site at the time of the accident.
It is understood he sustained serious head injuries after falling approximately 12 feet at around 10.30pm on Saturday, having gained entry to a disused building set to be pulled down.
A spokeswoman for Tullis Russell said, “The accident took place in a restricted demolition site unauthorised access to which is totally prohibited.
“The injured employee was not on shift at the time of the incident, should not have been present anywhere on the mill site and was not authorised to be present in the demolition area.
“The incident is now the subject of a police investigation and an internal company investigation.
“We can make no further comment at this time other than to say our thoughts are with the employee’s family and friends.”
Fife Constabulary confirmed the matter was under investigation.
A spokesman said, “He was taken by ambulance to Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline, and later transferred to the Western General, Edinburgh, where his condition is considered as serious.”
