Scotland’s ancient capital has booked its place as Scotland’s literary capital.

Dunfermline home of the world’s first free library gifted by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie has just been given the title of Scotland’s most well-read town.

West Fifers are apparently big bookworms, checking out the latest books, magazines and newspapers in print and e-book form.

The avid readers are devouring everything from romance to crime, making sure they’re not left on the shelf when it comes to a thrilling tome.

But they’re not only traditional page turners a study has shown e-books are also particularly popular in Dunfermline as it’s in the top five towns in the UK with the highest number of book downloads per head.

Amazon’s ranking was determined by compiling sales of all books, magazines and newspapers in print and Kindle format since June 1 2011 on a per capita basis.

While the Auld Grey Toun came top, elsewhere in Courier country, Perth came in fifth spot.

Dunfermline was also the only Scottish town to make it in to the UK top 20.

It ended up in 18th spot of the list based on the UK towns and cities with more than 20,000 residents.
