Hours cut at Angus minor injury units due to staff shortages

Hours cut at Angus minor injury units due to staff shortages

Two minor injury units in Angus will operate under reduced opening hours due to staff shortages.

The changes at the units in Montrose and Forfar will take place from Monday.

The new opening hours will be Monday to Friday from 9am until 4.30pm and from 7.45am until 10pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Medical director for NHS Tayside Dr Andrew Russell said the changes were necessary as the health board had found “difficulties” in recruiting trained staff.

He said: “It is essential that we provide an MIIU (Minor Injury and Illness Units) service with appropriately skilled staff which is safe for patients and staff.

“We find ourselves in a position where there is a shortage of appropriately trained staff and a difficulty in recruiting new staff and we have had to make the decision to temporarily restrict the opening times of the units.”

The hours for the other two minor injury units in Angus won’t change.

Arbroath Infirmary will continue to be open 24 hours a day and Brechin MIIU will still open between 9am and 4.30pm every day.

Mr Russell said the situation would continue to be monitored and he hoped the changes to the opening hours would be temporary.

He added: “We realise that this temporary change to working hours in the MIIU may mean that some patients have to travel further to access services and we apologise for this.

“However, shortening the opening hours during the week allows us to keep the services open longer during the weekends when it is busier. It also allows us to operate all four MIIUs in Angus.

“We will continue to monitor the situation over the coming weeks with the aim of returning to normal operating hours as soon as is practical.

“There is already a review under way which is working towards developing a new service model for delivering minor injury and illness services that will improve the capability and capacity to support care for the population of Angus.”

Support groups using facilities in Whitehills Health and Community Care Centre in Forfar will be unaffected by this change to opening hours.
