A record crowd attended Scotland’s largest vintage vehicle auction at the weekend.

Around 400 people were at the Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club (SVCC) event near Glamis in the hope of picking up a piece of motoring history.

Some highlight purchases included an Austin pedal car that went for £1,400, a 1927 Alvis 1250 that sold for £1,600 and a 1935 Austin 7 that fetched just over £3,000.

Organiser Lesley Munro said the event had been a tremendous success.

She added: “The sale went really well and the whole day was just fantastic. We had a lot of people coming up from the south of England and lots of Irish folk coming over.

“It is a bit of an enthusiast’s market but there are a lot of them, and with more vendors coming from down south it has grown and grown.”

More than 200 bidders registered with the club in advance of the event, which was held at the SVCC base at Bridge View House.

Viewing of lots was held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week ahead of the Saturday auction which started at 9am.

In addition to full vehicles an Aladdin’s Cave of hard-to-come-by spare parts was also up for sale. Brass fire extinguishers, old workshop manuals and a yoke for a horse-drawn vehicle were among the items on offer.

Raleigh Chopper bicycles and an array of early BMXs caught the attention of cycling fans, alongside more unusual lots like a Tonka Toy Dozer and early hood ornaments.

Lesley said the dry weather had helped keep people at the venue.

“The last two years we have held it, it has been snowing. Somebody came over and said they were amazed to see we had grass!”
