‘Terrible time’ for family of Dundee flat fire victims

A Kirriemuir man who lost his mother and brother in a Dundee tenement fire has said his family is enduring a “terrible” time.

Kyle Bown said his family is still reeling from the tragic events of Thursday morning.

His mum Evelyn McCabe, 56, and brother Steven Bown, 31, both died following a fire in a top-floor flat on Park Avenue.

Fire crews were called to the tenement at 7am, although it is feared the fire had been burning for some time before the alarm was raised by a downstairs neighbour.

Both Ms McCabe and Mr Bown were given CPR on the pavement outside the flat but both were later pronounced dead.

Kyle Bown said: “We’d rather not talk about it.

“It’s a terrible time.”

He added: “We are still trying to come to terms with what happened.”

Fire investigators returned to Park Avenue yesterday as investigations into the cause of the blaze continued.

Flowers had been left on the pavement outside the block.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service group manager Steve Gunning said: “The cause of the fire has still not been identified and is still under investigation.

“As soon as our investigations are concluded we will release that information.

“We spent much of Thursday in the neighbourhood reaffirming fire safety messages and reassuring residents.”

All residents of the tenement were allowed to return home on Thursday apart from Sean Rowan, who raised the alarm.

He was woken by a creaking sound and, when he turned on the light, saw a large black mark on the ceiling of his bedroom, with smoke pouring though.

The ceiling later collapsed and now Mr Rowan faces being out of his flat for several months.

He has been given a temporary place to stay by Dundee City Council.

The 25-year-old said: “When I left my flat the ceiling in my bedroom was completely black.

“At this stage I don’t know when I will get back into my flat.

“However, when you think that two people died in that building, not getting back into my flat straight away is not a priority.

“I think it is only just sinking in now what happened.”

Kevin Cordell, depute convener of housing at Dundee City Council, said: “Temporary accommodation has been provided by the council for one of the residents.”
