‘Vibrant rebirth’ for former Dundee College building

Plans to redevelop the former Dundee College building at Constitution Road have been unveiled.
Plans to redevelop the former Dundee College building at Constitution Road have been unveiled.

A “vibrant rebirth” of a vandal-plagued former Dundee College building could begin soon.

The huge derelict multi-storey site at Constitution Road has become a magnet for anti-social behaviour and thieves since it closed in 2011 but now its new owners have submitted plans to convert it into flats.

There is also scope for workspace and a new cafe within the proposals, which will be considered by the council.

The site has also been given a new name, Vox Dundee, which developers say will be a “vibrant mixed-use community”.

If approved, the building would be turned into 110 flats, workspace and a new cafe.

The plans also allow for a gym, lounge, cinema/ auditorium and extensive landscaped gardens.

Edinburgh’s Whiteburn Projects bought the building in April last year, and development manager Eve McCurrich said: “This is an incredible project to be involved in.

“Our philosophy is to create urban spaces that challenge the status quo, and we’re really excited to be proposing this new way of city living right in the heart of Dundee.

Our public consultation event at the end of last year generated lots of positive interest and feedback.”

Alan Seddon of Keppie Design said: “Vox Dundee shows us change is possible, not just for an old and unloved building, but for cities in general, and our cities do need to change.”
