Power cut hits Dundee homes and businesses

Power cut hits Dundee homes and businesses

Power cuts across east Dundee left hundreds of homes and businesses without electricity on Tuesday.

Up to a thousand addresses were affected by the outages which began around 10.30am in the DD8 postcode area.

At around 1.15pm more cuts were reported, this time affecting people in the DD4 area.

The later cuts included the Kingsway East Fire Station.

Staff had to activate an emergency generator to maintain response ability, but a spokesman insisted there was never any impact on the station’scapability to respond to any incidents.

Asda Milton was also affected and the store had to close its petrol station for a time after the lights failed.

An Asda spokesman said there had been no long-term impact.

“Due to a power cut affecting the local area the petrol station was closed for a short time this afternoon,” he said.

Many homes were also left without power. Some city residents took to social media to voice their frustration.

One person said: “Oh the joys. Come into work to find there’s been a major power cut and all the wagons are held back.”

A spokesman for Scottish andSouthern Energy, who provide powerin the area, said several hundredcustomers were affected.

“A total of 467 customers were affected by a power cut at 1.15pm in the Kingsway east area,” he said.“Engineers were on site and power was restored by 1.57pm.”

The spokesman said bad weather was to blame, adding: “The outage is believed to have been caused by high winds.”

Although better weather is predicted for the end of the week, wind and heavy rain are set to batter the UK for the next few days.

High winds, some reaching speeds of 60 or 70 miles per hour hit Tayside on Sunday and Monday while someareas also experienced torrentialdownpours.
