Accountant bitten by Travellers’ dog in ‘traumatic’ attack

Travellers’ dogs attacked a young accountant in Dundee as she went for a lunchtime stroll.

The 32-year-old had to be taken to accident and emergency after being “bitten seven or eight times” by a hound.

Police, as well as the council’s dog control unit, are hoping to bring the animal under control following the “traumatic” incident.

The Technology Park worker who does not want to be identified for fear of reprisals said she had been terrified during the confrontation, which took place on Thursday.

The woman, who lives in Anstruther, told The Courier: “I was out for my walk at lunch and this dog came running straight at me.

“It was quite small and just started biting at my ankles. It must have bitten me seven or eight times. I was lucky because it mostly got my tights but it got me at least twice properly.

“Two other dogs were nearby and circled me. It just wouldn’t leave me alone. It was traumatic,” she added.

A Traveller eventually called the dog off and the woman was able to free herself from the canine’s grip.

Fleeing to her office, the accountant contacted the police and dog control. She also went to accident and emergency to have her injuries and vaccinations checked, and was too traumatised to return to work that day.

The accountant, who began working in Dundee four months ago, said there have been regular problems with Travellers at the site since she started there.

“I should be safe to walk around the place I work in my lunch hour,” she said. “Something really needs to be done. This won’t stop me walking but I’ll certainly be taking a different route to avoid them in the future.”

A spokesman for Dundee City Council said: “Animal welfare officers from the council, along with colleagues from Police Scotland, attended an incident at Luna Place on Thursday.

“If the owners of the dog can be contacted, we will speak to them about their future conduct and control of the animal.”
