Memorial fund set up to create lasting legacy to Cupar man Darren Lackie

A memorial fund has been set up in memory of a Fife soldier who tragically died while on holiday in Portugal.

Darren Lackie was laid to rest with full military honours a fortnight ago, but residents of Cupar want to make sure he is never forgotten.

The popular 21-year-old was a familiar face in his home town and there was widespread sadness when news of his death broke.

A veteran of conflict in Afghanistan, the Black Watch squaddie was described by regimental chiefs as a “brave and tenacious” rising young star.

His life was cruelly cut short during what should have been a dream holiday with girlfriend Ashleigh Wilson in the resort of Albufeira.

The circumstances surrounding Darren’s death have been disputed, with his father Graham insisting he was murdered.

However, what is certainly not in doubt is the esteem in which the soldier is held in his native Fife.

Cupar resident Rod Whyte is setting up the new memorial fund and is sure Darren would approve.

“What has happened is just terrible and I want to help make sure everybody remembers Darren,” the 58-year-old engineer told The Courier. “I have spoken with his parents and they are happy to support what I am doing.

“Darren was a Cupar lad and I knew him since he was a baby there are only a few months between him and my own son. I am sure Darren would feel proud to know we are doing something good for the town in his name.”

With the help of Voluntary Organisations North East Fife (VONEF), Rod is establishing a charter for the memorial fund but is already clear what could be achieved.

“We want to enhance sporting facilities in Cupar for toddlers up to teenagers,” Rod said. “Darren was very much involved in sport locally. I am hoping the fact that he was such a hugely popular guy will lead to local businesses really getting behind the fund.

“We want to keep Darren’s memory alive but also help the youth of Cupar.”

Darren’s dad Graham said he “very much” welcomed proposals for a memorial fund.

“It would basically be a common good fund for young people in Cupar,” he said. “Darren would be delighted.”

Rod has asked pubs to take part in a sports quiz and plans a music quiz night in the Imperial on May 5.

Meanwhile, the Golf Tavern will be the venue for a fund-raising fun day on Sunday, May 29.

Although registration of the memorial is not yet complete, businesses or individuals keen to back it can make cheques out to VONEF’s “special account”.
