Pickletillum Inn faces demolition in new affordable housing project

Plans are in the pipeline to demolish the historic Pickletillum Inn in north east Fife as part of a wider affordable housing project.

Parkhill Construction Services Ltd and Drumoig Developments Ltd have lodged plans with Fife Council to build between eight and 10 flats on the site of the old coaching inn, thought to date back to the 1700s.

The properties, if given the go-ahead, will be owned and managed by Kingdom Housing Association.

The two construction companies behind the proposals have also put forward a separate application to erect 30 homes, along with 11 retirement houses, in the Drumoig area.

Planning permission in principle is also sought for 21 holiday chalets, a shop and extensions to the Drumoig Golf Hotel, plus improvements at the former Scottish National Golf Centre and the associated driving range.

Recycling facilities on the 29-acre site are also proposed as part of the application.

A report by Montgomery Forgan Associates on behalf of Parkhill Construction Services Ltd and Drumoig Developments Ltd states: “The Local Plan acknowledges that Drumoig has no local community facilities to serve the existing population and recognises that a modest increase in housing numbers could begin to encourage the introduction of community services and facilities that Drumoig currently lacks, such as a local shop, integrated green space and development ancillary to the golf club.

“There has generally been positive engagement with the local community, including both Drumoig Residents’ Association and Drumoig Community Trust, over the detail of the masterplan.

“In board terms, it is considered that the mixed-use development would generally fulfil the requirements of the current Adopted Local Plan.

“In addition, the development proposals would integrate the separate and detached elements of Drumoig to help make it a more rounded and sustainable settlement and would utilise either vacant or underused land or buildings with no serious detriment to the setting of Drumoig or the surrounding rural landscape.”

The report states that specific timescales for both Pickletillum and Drumoig developments are yet to be finalised but the intention is that they will be built over four phases, commencing next year.
