Vandals have desecrated a Kirkcaldy landmark as part of a graffiti spree in the town.

Just 12 months after it was refurbished, the town’s promenade has been targeted by criminals who have left daubings along the popular attraction, the latest in a series of incidents in the town.

The news has been met with consternation by former MSP Christine May, who was a central figure in having the waterfront walkway renovated.

“It is very dispiriting,” she told The Courier.

“I walk along the promenade regularly and it gives so much pleasure to many other walkers.

“I know that a lot of people are going to be very upset when they hear about this.

“Even in the winter months it is proving very popular.

“I was walking along it the other day and saw plenty of people using it.

“It’s very, very sad that it has been vandalised and I just hope that there is CCTV somewhere that can catch those responsible.

“I’m sure they’ll be very proud of the waste of public money it will take to clear it up.”

The new promenade was reopened last December following a £9 million renovation.

Running the length of the town’s waterfront, the walkway is used by hundreds of people every day and has been touted as the focal point for a proposed regeneration of the town centre.

However, having remained an idyllic attraction since reopening 12 months ago, this is the first serious instance of vandalism to have blighted the rejuvinated prom.

Police are now investigating and councillor Susan Leslie says that this latest incident follows on from others in the town.

“I have been reporting this to the police and passing on info for the last four to six weeks,” she said.

“It started in the Pratt Street tunnel and Beveridge Park and has spread from there.

“The tags are the same or similar and not just unslightly but causing damage to public and private property.

“I have been receiving information from constituents in order to assist the police and I would urge anyone who knows anything about the individuals who are committing these crimes to contact the police.”
