Drifting snow closes roads

Snow in north Fife and the hills behind Dundee, with forecasts of more to come over the weekend.
Snow in north Fife and the hills behind Dundee, with forecasts of more to come over the weekend.

Tayside Police have asked motorists to take care as snow continues to cause disruption on roads.

In Angus, motorists are advised to avoid the Wellbank and Craichie areas, following high winds and drifting snow which have made roads impassable.

The B9128 Forfar to Arbroath Road, B978 Kellas to Kirbuddo Road and all unclassified roads in the area the area are closed.

Perthshire road closures include, A93 Spittal of Glenshee, and the unclassified Knapp to Abernyte road, Woodside to Abernyte road and Abernethy to Strathmiglo road.

According to the Met Office, more snow is expected this weekend.

A severe weather warning for snow will remain in place until Saturday, when up to five centimetres of snow is expected to fall.

Scattered snow showers are predicted throughout today with more persistent snow due overnight and into Saturday.

The weather is predicted to improve on Monday but temperatures will fall over the course of the week.

The icy conditions caused a number of problems on Thursday, with treacherous conditions reported on many routes.

A 35-year-old man was taken to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, with neck injuries after losing control of his pick-up truck by Finavon on the A90 around 7am.

A woman was rushed to Perth Royal Infirmary with a back injury after her car flipped on to its roof on the A913 between Cupar and Den of Lindores around 8am.

Many motorists lambasted the state of the roads although claims some main roads had not been properly gritted were denied by councils and BEAR Scotland.

Bill Liddle, Fife Council service manager maintenance operations, said: “We had patrols out overnight to deal with snow showers that hit Fife.

“We carried out a full grit in the early morning before being hit by a heavy band of snow around 6am, which lasted over an hour. This led to snow lying on the roads.”

A Bear Scotland spokeswoman said: “Our dedicated 24/7 winter maintenance team have been out all night and morning treating trunk roads as our forecast predicted low temperatures.”

The cold snap forced the cancellation of several bus services in and around Dundee, and Tarfside Primary School in Angus was closed.
