Angus artist and businesswoman Andre Ritchie

Angus artist and businesswoman Andre Ritchie

Andre Dawn Cameron Ritchie, an Angus artist who operated Arbroath Ceramics, has died aged 73.

Mrs Ritchie was born in Kent and spent some of her early childhood in Singapore due to her father’s role in the RAF.

In her late teens the family moved to Hopeman, Morayshire, and she stayed in Scotland for the majority of her life.

While living in Edinburgh, where she was employed as an electrolysis operator, she met Harry and they wed at Aberfoyle Church in 1968.

They had two children, Heather and Cameron, and moved to Friockheim in 1978 and then Barry in 1988.

Mrs Ritchie first became interested in ceramics while on a family holiday in Canada and on her return found a studio in Brechin.

She decided to start her own business in Arbroath in 1984, first setting up in small premises in Catherine Street before later moving to a larger studio in Westport after becoming established.

At Arbroath Ceramics she taught classes every afternoon and also held evening classes at the studio and in Dundee.

She also did seminars and demonstrations for local groups, including care homes and mental health groups, as well as attending craft fairs.

Arbroath Ceramics closed in 2000 and on retiring Mrs Ritchie took up painting and attended art classes in Broughty Ferry and Carnoustie.

She is survived by Harry and their two children.

Her funeral will be at Parkgrove Crematorium, Friockheim, at 1.30pm on Monday.
