Former Broughty Ferry minister Tom Robertson

The Rev Tom Robertson, a former minister of St James’ Church in Broughty Ferry, has died after a long illness. He was 77.

Mr Robertson was born on Orkney and on leaving school he started work in Perth with the General Accident Insurance Company before going on to study for the ministry at New College Edinburgh.

He served an assistantship with the Rev D. P. Thompson at St Ninian’s in Crieff before being ordained and inducted to his first charge St Clement’s in Dingwall.

During his time in the Highlands he served as secretary to the Strathpeffer Convention and was chairman of the local branch of the Lord’s Day Observance Society.

In June 1970 Mr Robertson was inducted to St James’ where he stayed until this retirement in January 2001. He remains the congregation’s longest-serving minister.

In 1990 he wrote a commemorative booklet covering the congregation’s history as part of the celebrations connected with St James’ centenary.

After his retirement Mr Robertson served as a locum minister in a number of congregations in Dundee and Fife. He also served Dundee Presbytery as its moderator and as convener and vice-convener of various committees.

A characteristic of his ministry was his commitment to the expository preaching of the Bible and he was known for providing excellent pastoral support to bereaved families.

Mr Robertson is survived by his wife Barbara, three children and seven grandchildren.
