102-year-old Gertrude ‘Gertie’ Paton

A Tayport woman has died almost three years after celebrating her 100th birthday.

Gertrude Paton, known as Gertie, passed away peacefully at Hawkhill House Residential Nursing Home in Aberdeen on Sunday.

She was born in Tayport in February 1908 the second youngest of eight children and went to the local school.

After her father’s death she left school aged 14 to work and became an office girl, working her way up to secretary at Dundee jute merchant W. G. Grant.

In 1937 she married nurseryman and seedsman George in Queen Street Church, Tayport, and the couple had daughter Winifred in 1939.

At the time they lived in a small flat in Castle Street which had no running hot water.

Second daughter Nancy came along five years later and the family moved to Woodlea in Reform Street.

Mrs Paton worked in the family shop for many years at Christmas and in the busy spring months.

She was also a long-serving Cub leader in Tayport and was a member of Scotscraig Golf Club from 1933, serving as ladies’ captain and later being made an honorary life member.

She played a few holes up until the age of 92 and even when she was 100 would still go out for some putting.

Mrs Paton was also an active member of the Women’s Guild, helping with fund-raising, baking and sewing for sales.

She enjoyed playing cards with a local club, as well as flower arranging, cross-stitch and china painting.

She regularly attended the guild, Old Folks’ Club and church until recently.

Until two weeks before her death Mrs Paton lived independently at home.

She was a much-loved grandmother and great-grandmother, and leaves behind daughter Nancy.
