Perth skier Charlie Guest to compete in world championships

Charlie Guest is hoping to return to competitive action after breaking her back.

Charlie Guest will compete in the Alpine World Skiing Championships just three months after breaking her back in a potentially career-ending accident.

She will travel to Beaver Creek, Colorado, next month for the event her first competition since being injured.

Charlie had her training for the world championships cut short when she broke four vertebrae after hitting a rock on slopes in Sweden and was strapped to a board for eight hours as an ambulance took her 155 miles to hospital in Ostersund.

The 20-year-old was back on the slopes by Christmas and now has the World Championships, which take place from February 2-15, firmly in her sights.

She said: “It’s a great feeling to be selected as part of the British team competing at Beaver Creek. This is what I was working towards before the accident so to still be selected has given me such a boost.

“It’s only a few weeks away but I’m more determined than ever to be there and competing. There’s no way I’m ruling it out yet.”

Originally from Perth, Charlie is very aware of how different things could have been if she had not started wearing a back protector, having only worn one twice before her accident.

She added: “I’m very lucky to even be walking let along considering competing at the World Skiing Championships next month after my accident. The back protector is an absolute must for me now. It should be compulsory ski-wear for everyone, regardless of level and ability.”
