VIDEO: Ionas lead Perthshire school’s singing challenge on Iona

A Perthshire school which became an internet sensation after putting a choir on Ben Nevis to sing a song about Ben Nevis has successfully completed another unusual challenge getting two singers called Iona to lead a performance of the Hebridean Carol Iona on the island of Iona.

Earlier this year, pupils from Ardvreck School climbed Scotland’s premier peak for a rousing rendition of Highland Cathedral, much to the surprise of onlookers.

Now the Crieff prep school has successfully carried out its second musical expedition with a trip to the west coast.

The latest wheeze began as a joke made at a party, but quickly grew into a challenge which became too hard to resist.

The school’s 19-strong girls’ choir set off from Ardvreck after breakfast on Saturday, November 21, and drove 75 miles to Oban, before catching the ferry to Mull.

With no time to waste, the choir went straight to Iona Abbey for their first performance, which ended with a round of applause from visitors.

The following morning, the choir sang again, accompanied by viola and piano, on a spectacular beach known as the White Strand of the Monks. This was followed by a quick swim in the sea.

The girls came prepared with their swimsuits on under their clothing.

The third and final performance took place on Dun I, the highest point on the island. The choir, featuring Iona Morgan and Iona Billinge, were accompanied by Niamh Kelly on viola.

Headmaster Dan Davey said: “I have challenged all our children. If they suggest a cultural or sporting challenge, then we will facilitate the adventure.

“Education goes beyond the classroom and a trip like this gives all those involved a treasured experience which will enhance their lives.”

A video of the performance has already been viewed hundreds of times online.

Ardvreck School singers completed their Ben Nevis challenge in August. Their 4.400ft high, wind-swept version of Highland Cathedral moved at least one onlooker to tears and went down a storm on Facebook and Youtube.
