Eighties icon Billy Ocean joins line-up for Perth Christmas party

Chart-topper Billy Ocean has been added to Perth’s burgeoning Christmas lights line-up.

The ’80s favourite will join retro rockers Showaddywaddy at the city’s seasonal switch-on ceremony later this month.

Also on the bill will be tribute band Only One Direction, it was confirmed yesterday.

However, Perth and Kinross Council, which is hosting the extravaganza, said the best is still to come with the identity of this year’s headline act still being kept under wraps.

The star or stars will be officially named in the coming days.

They will follow in the footsteps of 2014’s headliner, Mysterious Girl singer Peter Andre.

Billy Ocean, 65, is one of the most successful acts of the ’70s and ’80s with hits including Red Light Spells Danger, Caribbean Queen and When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going.

In recent years, Ocean found a new generation of fans and in 2010 he was awarded the lifetime achievement award at the MOBOs.

Councillors approved funding for this year’s event last month.

The November 21 ceremony, which is part of the city’s four-month Winter Festival, was awarded more than £50,000 of common good cash.

However, details of how much will be spent on this year’s line-up has not been revealed. Last year, £34,000 was spent on fees for Andre, Boney M and other acts.

A row erupted after the council initially refused to say how much it paid Andre to headline the show.

But following a ruling by the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman, Andre’s payment of £20,000 was made public.

It prompted concerns that agents would no longer supply talent for future Perth events.

The council said that the 2014 event attracted more than 90,000 people to the city centre and generated an estimated £1.9 million for the local economy.

This year’s show will feature a parade, street entertainment, reindeers and fireworks. A controversial street market, which was branded a fiasco last year, will not be returning.
